A couple of days ago I decided to paint with watercolors for the first time in many years, and it was so much fun! Oil is still my favorite medium to work with and it's probably going to be for many years to come, but to go in a new direction every once in a while and try out new things I think is only good practice. It sharpens your mind when you find yourself wandering around in unknown terrain. In watercolors you have to build up your values and colors in a very different way and correcting mistakes is a much harder thing to do. I've mainly been painting birds and here are a couple of Robins which I thought was especially fun to work on.
I painted these on some Arches watercolor paper I happend to have in my paperfolder. It's been great to paint on, its pretty rough but I kind of like that. Both of these were painted in the course of a day. That's another thing about watercolors thats been fun, that you only have to wait for a few minutes before the surfice is dry to the touch and is ready for the next layer of paint. I don't know how long this watercolor obsession with painting birds is gonna last, but I've just decided to roll with it. :)
